Summary of Project
"Folklore and Post-Folklore: Structure, Typology and Semiotics"
The goal of the present project is the Internet publications of the new
academic materials related to the studies of the modern popular culture,
folklore and anthropology. The priority is given to the presentation of the
modern urban folklore (or "post-folklore"), as well as to the new
methodologies developed in the related fields of studies. Special effort is
made to insure that the new materials that have been published in a small
number of copies will be available for professional audience. In general
terms, the project is designed to indicate the new thematic fields that
previously have not been noticed in the academic studies.
About seminar
Present project will be executed by the participants of the research seminar
"Folklore and Post-Folklore: Structure, Typology and Semiotics", which has
been founded in 1995 and is directed by S.Yu.Nekljudov on the base of the
Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities in the Russian State
University for the Humanities. In the work of seminar participate from 20 to
30 scholars (students, graduate students, fellows and professors) from
different Russian cities (Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Petrozavodsk, Ulianovsk,
Perm', Cheliabinsk, Shadrinsk, Jakutsk, Volgograd, Rostov, Astrakhan', and
some others).
About site
In 2000 the seminar's team created a new site "Folklore and Post-Folklore:
Structure, Typology and Semiotics"
http://www.mpsf.org/virtual/Mast4/content.htm as a part of the Moscow
Public Science Foundation's general project "Virtual Workshops in Social
Sciences"
. This site presented a wide range of materials on
the theory of folklore and the studies of modern urban folklore. An
important place was given to the publication of the texts of so-called
"naive literature", seminar's reports, thematic bibliographies, the syllabus
of lecture courses on folklore, annotations of recent Ph.D. dissertations on
folklore studies and related fields. Among the site's options is the
mailing of the news reports and the annotations of the new books and
articles.
Main directions of project:
(1) Preparation and publication in the Internet of the materials related to
the studies of modern urban folklore and to the new methodological
approaches to the folklore studies in general (for example: systematization
and classification of the folk texts; folk texts and cumulative structures).
(2) Creation of a virtual academic community which would bring together the
scholars from the different parts of Russia and from other countries;
organization of the virtual workshop for the discussion of the present
academic problems.
The electronic publication of articles related to folklore's theory or to
the studies of modern urban folklore will be particularly beneficial for the
scholars who work in different parts of Russia and abroad:
(1) it would give them a possibility to compare and to study little known
local traditions;
(2) it would help them to design the lecture courses on the theory of
folklore;
(3) it would provide them with new texts and methodological materials
which can be useful both for teaching and for personal research projects;
(4) it would help to maintain "long distance" connections between the
specialists who work in the same field.
